Nicholas Wells is an attorney whose practice is focused on intellectual property and technology matters. Wells handles principally (1) trademark prosecution, including obtaining and managing international trademark portfolios; (2) complex digital copyright matters; (3) domain names and related technology or website matters; and (4) licensing or business contracts relating to all types of intellectual property and technology.
Wells was affiliated for several years with the leading Salt Lake City law firm of Kirton & McConkie, where he worked in both the intellectual property and international sections of the firm. Wells has extensive trademark experience including client counseling, all phases of prosecution before the USPTO, oppositions, cancellations, dispute resolution, and licensing. Much of his experience has dealt with international trademarks, assisting international clients in securing trademark protection in the U.S. market as well as assisting U.S. clients in securing protection outside the U.S.
Prior to his legal career, Wells worked for many years in the software industry, as a computer programmer, technical writer, and marketing director. During that time, he authored more than a dozen books on the Linux operating system, network security, and related topics. His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages and his textbooks have become bestsellers in the higher education market. Wells has also presented technology training sessions in Taiwan, Venezuela, Korea, and throughout the United States and Europe.
Wells holds a bachelors degree in linguistics from the University of Utah; an MBA from Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Business; a JD from the George Washington University Law School; and a postgraduate certificate in international intellectual property law from the University of London.
